Choosing a place for yachting
When choosing an area for a water trip, there are several important factors to consider. For example, whether there are charter companies in this city that will provide the ship. You should also soberly assess your capabilities and choose the safest area, and not play a superhero.
Season is important: in some waters, sailing depends on the season. Experts advise to keep in mind the most untrained crew member. These are usually children. Depending on this, you need to choose an area.
You need to take care of renting a yacht in advance. It is difficult to obtain it in high season. Sometimes you have to book in advance, for example, 4 months in advance.
The world’s best yachting areas
Greece
This country is one of the best for yachting. There are several thousand islands in the three seas. Thanks to that it is possible choose any route — with long or short transitions, with different overnight stays and visits to historical sites.
The most popular areas include the Argosaronic and Ionian Islands, the Cyclades and Dodecanese archipelagos, Crete, the eastern Sporades and the Peloponnese coast.
Croatia
In Croatia, marinas are located near old cities with centers of modern art, ancient Roman buildings and other showplaces. The yachting season starts in May and lasts until September. In autumn and winter, it is inconvenient to yacht due to strong winds. But in summer the sea is calm, gentle — there is no better time to go on a yacht.
Turkey
This area is great for beginners. It is full of bays, coastal coves and small shelters. You can stop for a couple of hours almost anywhere on the coast. The marinas in this country are excellently equipped, after all, there is 30 years of experience.
Turkey is good because there are many showplaces, service is at a high level, and there is no extreme. The season runs from April to November. Marmaris has a traditional sailing week in early November. You can take part in an amateur regatta. Another interesting event is the Bodrum Gulet Race: a competition on wooden boats.
Canaries and Balears
Both Spanish regions have windy weather and warm temperate climate. Baleara’s main base is located in the royal marina of Palma de Mallorca, from where many yachts go on sea voyage. The route can also be started from Ibiza and Menorca.
In the Canaries, the main base is in Tenerife, in Santa Cruz. Others are in the Radozul Marina and Gran Canaria. Yachts can be chartered at the school located in La Gomera.
In this area, you can swim 150 miles in a couple of weeks, walk to Ibiza and Formentera with its magnificent beaches, and then return to Mallorca. The route in the Canary Islands must be lead taking into account the strong wind.
Thailand
In this country, yachting is best developed in three regions: Phuket, Ko Samui and the Ko Chang archipelago. Phuket has vertical steep islands, as well as the location where Danny Boyle’s famous film The Beach, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, was filmed. The Ko Chang archipelago is home to more gently sloping, volcanic islands with rich vegetation. There is no place for racing because of the small water area.
In Thailand, the season lasts all year round. The difference is in the wind — in spring and autumn, the southern monsoons change to the northern ones, so heavy rains are possible. Summer and winter differ in temperature by only a couple of degrees.
Seychelles
There are no dangerous currents, tides, or marine animals that could harm humans near the Seychelles. It would be great to fly here several times a year, but what a bad luck — the islands are so far from Russia. But there is a visa-free regime with our country.
The islands in this area are close to each other, the two main marinas are Praslin and Mahe. There are many anchorages throughout. The wind in the Seychelles is predictable, the waves are small, so anyone can travel without fear.
France
One of the most developed yachting regions of the Mediterranean is the coast of France. There are a lot of high class marinas here. During the high season, the parkings are completely packed, so make sure you book in advance.
Yachting in France is a combination of an exciting boat trip and excursions in small resort towns. In recent years, they have been greatly transformed, becoming more civilized. It is pleasant to walk along the embankments here and explore the peculiarities of the narrow streets.
Italy
In Italy, yachting is well developed. Here, perhaps the largest number of yachts per capita, enterprises produce expensive, luxurious ships, and the country’s coastline, 5 thousand miles long, is washed by five seas.
The best places for sailing on a yacht are on the west coast — from Liguria to Sicily. Rocky shores, many different islands, natural and cultural attractions meet here.
The east coast is worse, unless you can stay in Venice. But exactly here excellent sandy beaches are located. In the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Seas, there are so-called elite places: Liguria, Sardinia, Capri, Amalfi, the secluded Aeolian Islands.
